ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University men's tennis team opened the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) portion of the season with a sweep of visiting Adrian College.
The Thunder opened with three doubles wins. The most convincing came in the third match where Landon Bassett and Asher Monson won 6-3. The other two matches ended with 6-4 wins for Trine, with Sammy Yin and Andrew Spirrison in the top match and Drew Hackney and Emmett Wirth in No. 2.
Yin made quick work of the No. 2 match to secure the first singles point of the day. He won 6-1, 6-0. Spirrison finished second in the No. 3 match, winning 6-1, 6-3, while Hackney had to do a bit more work in the top match for a 6-4, 6-4 win.
Wirth just avoided a tiebreaker in his second set competing in the fifth match, he won 6-1, 7-5. Leyton Byler needed that tiebreaker in the sixth match, but did pick up the 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) win. Monson had the longest match of the day, going to tiebreakers in both sets and winning 7-6(7-5), 7-6(7-5).
The team improves to 11-4 overall and 1-0 in MIAA play. The win marks the 100th for head coach Erin Kolar at the helm. It marks the end of a string of milestones for Kolar, who has reached 100 wins with both the men's and women's programs, 200 wins overall and become the winningest men's coach at Trine. She became the winningest women's coach last season.
Trine will continue their season when they travel to face Albion College on Tuesday, March 31. That dual is set to start at 4 p.m.
