COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Trine University men's lacrosse team secured their tenth win of the season with a 9-1 victory against Capital University. The win is a historic one, representing the 49th for head coach Ryan Kuhn, the most by any head coach of the Thunder men's lacrosse program.
In the game, two members of the team led the way with three points each. Rocco Curatola did so with a goal and two assists while Chris Molnar led the way with three goals.
It was the home side that scored first, taking a 1-0 lead in the second minute of the first quarter. Curatola responded two minutes later with an assist from Vin Pantano before assisting Molnar on the team's second goal with just under nine minutes left in the quarter. Both goals were added by a man advantage off of Comet penalties. Connor Ballantyne with an assist from Riley Fischer finished the scoring in the first for the team, giving them a 3-1 lead for the first break.
Molnar and Ballantyne scored the only goals of the second period, building the Thunder lead to 5-1 for halftime.
Capital scored the first goal of the second half, before Trine scored the final four tallies of the game. Mitchell Voglewede scored twice in the third quarter and Molnar added another to take the 8-2 lead into the final period. JJ Boos rounded out the scoring in the fourth to give the final score of 9-2.
Defensively, Luke Arnold led the way in goal with seven saves. He played the vast majority of the game before being relieved by Zade Gawrys who added another assist. Justin Scheberle led the defense with two caused turnovers and shared the lead with four groundballs. Danny Kelly, Curatola and Arnold each had four groundballs as well.
Trine finishes the day 10-1 overall. They will begin Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association in their next game, hosting Calvin University on Wednesday, April 1. That contest is set to start at 7 p.m.
