ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University baseball team closed out its three-game series against Manchester University with a pair of losses on Sunday afternoon. Trine (4-11) fell in game one 9-4 and 8-4 in game two. Manchester is now 6-9 on the year.
Game one was scheduled for seven innings but went to extra innings, making game two a seven-inning contest.
Trine fell 9-4 in eight innings in game one. Manchester built a 4-0 lead through the scheduled seven innings while riding a no-hit bid from the right arm of Jackson Todor.
Luke Burford broke up the bid with a single, a pair of errors would load the bases for Trine. The rally began with an RBI groundout from
Brody Bond and was kicked into full gear with a double from
Cole Temple to cut the lead to 4-3. A bases loaded walk leveled the score and forced the extra inning. Manchester added five runs on three hits in the inning to take the win.
Trine struck first in game two with runs on a wild pitch and an error. Burford and
William Taczak scored the runs. Manchester scored three in the second and one in the third to take a 4-2 lead. The Spartans threatened to add to the lead in the fifth with a runner on third with two outs.
Jack Villareal ended the threat, sending a Spartan back to the dugout swinging.
Manchester added four runs in the sixth, Taczak ended the inning with help from Burford and
Sam Beckham as the trio turned a double play to end the inning.
Kyle Martin helped cut into the deficit with a homerun to left field. Taczak scored
Cole Schmidthuber with a base hit through the left side.
Cole Temple got into scoring position in the seventh with a single past the shortstop but was unable to score.
Trine returns to action on Wednesday with a road contest at Anderson University (Ind.) at 4:00 p.m.
