Men's Volleyball Blocks Falcons

ANGOLA, Ind. – Karl Both punched a dozen kills and four blocks to lead the Trine University men's volleyball team to a three-set sweep of Concordia University Wisconsin on Friday evening. Trine (5-6) took the first two sets in extra points before claiming the third 25-22 to complete the sweep of the Falcons (0-8).

Bryce Tupaz had 36 of Trine's 41 assists and Johnson-Kuhao Ho'okano-Pelekai added 10 more kills and three blocks.

A 5-0 run broke an early stalemate in set one to give Trine a 10-6 lead. Nicholas Hulskotter punched a pair of kill and Ho'okano-Pelekai added another. Ty Freeman preserved the lead with a pair of spikes as the Falcons swooped toward the lead. Seth McDonald broke a 21-all tie with an emphatic solo block and was followed by a momentum shifting ace from Ho'okano-Pelekai. The most emphatic block came from Both as he stuffed a Falcon attack to claim the set.

The Falcons answered in set two with leads of 9-3 and 15-10. The latter lead was erased with a 10-2 run. McDonald and John Mikrut each had a kill, then McDonald and Ho'okano-Pelekai paired up for a block. Two more kills from Mikrut and one from twin, Zach gave Trine a 20-17 lead. Again, CUW answered by forcing extra set points and even taking a 25-24 lead. A service error tied the game and two swings from Zach Mikrut put it to rest.

Trine led 12-9 in set three with two kills each from Both and Ho'okano-Pelekai. Trine maintained the lead by swapping points with the Falcons. 16 of the next 18 points came in alternating fashion with each team scoring back-to-back once. The Falcons pair was too little, too late as they extended a 24-20 set point to 24-22 before Both sent the dagger home.

Trine will travel to New York next weekend for the Nazareth Tournament. They take on the host Golden Flyers at 5 p.m. on Friday February 13.
