ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University men's lacrosse team battled through the elements to defeat visiting Heidelberg University 16-2. The two teams played through multiple snow showers and strong winds during the contest.
The Thunder scored four goals in the first quarter. JJ Boos struck first followed by a pair of tallies from Mitchell Voglewede. Connor Ballantyne ended the period before scoring the first of the second as well. Trine added five more before halftime, taking the 10-0 lead into the intermission. Voglewede had four goals total in the first half while Ballantyne had three. Will Gonia and Kramer Zastrow also scored in the second period.
The home side built their lead to 13 in the early part of the third quarter. Chris Molnar and Nathan Marchal joined Gonia in scoring the three tallies that made the score 13-0. Heidelberg scored their first goal in the sixth minute of the half.
Ballantyne and Gonia each scored another to start the fourth, with Noah Ericson finishing off the scorecard in the final minutes of play. The Student Princes had one more goal in the middle of the final period for the final score of 16-2.
Voglewede led the team with six points after adding two assists to his four goals. Ballantyne was second with five, four goals and one assist. Gonia had three goals and an assist, while Vin Pantano led the team with four assists.
In net, Zade Gawrys earned the win after playing the first half and securing the lead. Luke Arnold led the team with five saves in the second half. Mason Kaufman and Josh Hartman led the team with two caused turnovers each.
At the faceoff dot, Nick Fariello led the team with nine wins and just two losses. Alec Jankowski was second after going 8-for-9. Fariello also led the team with six groundballs.
The Thunder finish the weekend 3-0 after the pair of wins. They will return to play on Wednesday, February 25, when they travel to face Ohio Northern University. That game is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
