HOLLAND, Mich. – The 18
th ranked Trine University women's basketball team saw their 15 game winning streak and 33 game MIAA winning streak snapped on Saturday afternoon to the 11
th ranked Hope College Flying Dutch.
Zoe Willems had a career day for the Thunder (21-4, 15-1 MIAA) with 16 points. The Dutch finish the regular season 22-3 (14-2 MIAA). Trine claimed the MIAA Regular Season Championship last Saturday.
Willems scored 16 points and
Hailey Cole added 12 for the Thunder offense. Trine out rebounded the Dutch 32-21 but were unable to overcome the Dutch's stellar shooting performance. Six Dutch scored in double figures and the team shot better than 50% from the floor and the three point line to post the 89-58 win.
Trine hung tough in the first quarter ultimately tying the game at 15 before the first buzzer. Willems pitched in nine points in the frame, connecting on a triple and then made a trio of lay ups.
Hope started to heat up in the second quarter, scoring the first seven of the second quarter and then closed the quarter on a 13-3 run to take a 41-25 lead to the break.
The Thunder were able to pull within 10 early in the second half but the hosts were too much for Trine eventually leading by 21 at the end of the third quarter before nailing five triple in the final frame to squash any chance of a comeback.
Trine will host the final two rounds of the MIAA Tournament next Friday and Saturday. The semifinals are set for Friday night with Hope taking on the winner of Albion and Kalamazoo at 5:30 p.m. and Trine playing the winner of Calvin and Alma at 7:30.
