ANGOLA, Ind. –
Jayden Bradshaw notched a double-double and buried game sealing three pointer in the final minute of overtime as the Trine University men's basketball team took down Hope College 84-75 on Wednesday night. The Thunder (17-5, 9-2 MIAA) scored 17 points in overtime to move into a tie for second place in the MIAA with the Dutch (14-8, 9-2 MIAA).
Olivet owns the top spot in the MIAA with their win over Calvin this evening with three games remaining.
Bradshaw was joined by four others in double figures.
Danny Flood scored 16,
Nate Tucker and
Cade Brenner added 14 and
Logan McKenzie notched a dozen. Bradshaw added 12 rebounds to his monster performance, Tucker and McKenzie had nine a piece.
Trine controlled the first half wire to wire leading by as many as 13 when
Elias Lewis made a spectacular three pointer. Lewis had the ball at the top of the key well beyond three point range, as time expired on the shot clock he double clutched his attempt around a Dutch defended and threw up a prayer off the backboard that banked in to give Trine an 18-5 lead. Flood made three triples in the first half and Brenner scored 11 of his 14 in the frame to help Trine take a 40-26 lead at the half.
Hope cut the lead to five just before the midway point of the second half to trail 47-42. A 17-5 run ensued, Tucker knocked down a triple, then a pair of layups to sandwich a Brenner long ball. McKenzie added four to end the run. Hope returned the favor over the final 4:42 of regulation, ending the half on a 20-3 run. A few missed free throws set up the Dutch with a chance to tie the game as time expired and would do just that. Like Lewis' triple from earlier, Brendan Cargill heaved up a prayer at the buzzer that kissed off the same backboard and sent the game to overtime tied at 67.
Hope took its first and only lead of the game with a pair of free throws to lead 69-67. The next 13 points would go to the Thunder, all by way of the long ball or free throws. Flood snatched the lead back with a corner three, Tucker extended it with a pair of free throws and a triple. Flood then made it a three possession game with a pair from the stripe. A large crowd of loud Thunder faithful filled the MTI Center this evening, they were no louder than when Bradshaw caught a pass from McKenzie and found nothing but net on his three point attempt. The make put Trine ahead 80-69 with less than a minute remaining and pushed the Dutch to the brink. Bradshaw and Tucker closed out the win with a pair of makes from the free throw line.
Trine travels to Calvin University on Saturday afternoon for a 3:00 p.m. tilt with the Knights.
