Women's Volleyball Sweeps Away Final Non-Conference Foes

ANDERSON, Ind. – The Trine University volleyball team earned a pair of sweeps this afternoon at Anderson University. The Thunder (14-12, 3-3 MIAA) swept both the host Ravens (13-12, 3-4 HCAC) and Berea College (2-20, 0-6 HCAC). Trine served up 25 aces between the two matches.

Trine took the first match in convincing fashion over Berea, winning 25-14, 25-20, 25-21. The Thunder used an 11-0 run to take an 11-3 advantage in set one. The momentum held the rest of the way, Trine scored their next seven points on offense. Julia Maggio and Ambreeya Peoples each had a pair of kills and the Thunder pulled away for the win.

The Thunder methodically erased a 7-2 deficit through most of the set. Again a long unanswered scoring streak gave Trine the lead. Trailing 13-11, the Thunder rattled off seven consecutive points to take the lead for good. Abigail Hughes has two aces to bolster the advantage.

Trine notched four aces in set three including a pair to open the set. The Thunder closed out the sweep with a 6-1 run, ending with an ace from Annika Schrock.

Trine topped the host Ravens 25-17, 25-23, 25-21 in the second match. The Thunder would take set one convincingly while hitting .333. Julia Maggio and Elli Baker had five kills and  Reese Steenwyk added four more to give Trine the win.

The Thunder trailed for nearly all of the second set but finished on an 8-1 run backed by five kills from three different players. Set three was nearly identical with the Thunder closing out the win with an 8-3 run.

Trine hosts The University of Olivet on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. to open the final week of MIAA play. The Thunder can clinch a berth in the MIAA Tournament with a win in either of their games this week.
