ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University volleyball team fell to the nationally recognized Hope College Flying Dutch on Saturday afternoon in straight sets. Trine (7-9, 0-1 MIAA) got closer in each set but were unable to take a set from the Dutch (10-5, 1-0 MIAA).
Julia Maggio led the Thunder with a 10 kill-11 dig double-double. The Dutch took the match 25-15, 25-18, 25-22.
Hope quickly took large leads in each of the first two sets, 17-9 in the first and 14-6 in the second. Trine was able to find a little offense toward the end of set two. The offense carried over to the third set where the Thunder rallied from a 6-0 deficit to take an 11-10 lead.
Bailey Rasawehr and
Adelaide Elden sparked the rally with a block. Elden added a kill and Maggio a pair before the duo another block.
The lead grew to 16-12 with two more kills from Maggio and a pair of aces from
Jordan Budzinski. The Dutch would not be denied the sweep however, scoring 13 of the next 19 points to take the match.
Trine heads to Calvin University on Friday for the Midwest Invitational. The Thunder will take on both Calvin and Alma College in non-conference action as well as North Park University.
