ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University women's volleyball team swept away the Kalamazoo College Hornets on Saturday afternoon inside Hershey Hall. Trine (12-11, 3-2 MIAA) rallied from a six point deficit in the third set to complete the sweep of the Hornets (6-16, 2-4 MIAA) on Senior Day. The Thunder have now won five of their last six and are above .500 for the first time since September 19.
Elli Baker paced the offence with a dozen kills and
Addyson Kuzma led the defense with eight blocks, the fourth most in a three set match in program history.
Trine took advantage of 31 attacking errors by the Hornets, limiting them to just .018 hitting on the day. The Thunder scored their first two points via blocks from Kuzma. Trine would not trail in the set, leading by as many as seven. Baker sent home five kills in the set to give Trine a 1-0 advantage.
Kuzma provided an early block in set two and Trine opened up a 12-5 lead behind a flurry of errors from the guests. Kalamazoo tied the set at 16 but the Thunder offense had the answer, piling on five kills to push the Hornets to the brink.
The Hornets took a 14-8 lead in set three to threaten a fourth set against the hosts. Trine got kills from Baker,
Julia Maggio, and
Reese Steenwyk to erase the Hornet lead. Maggio erased a 19-18 Hornet lead with three kills and Steenwyk completed the sweep with a swing of her own.
Trine returns to action on Friday, October 30 at Albion College for a 6:30 p.m. first serve.
