GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Trine University women's volleyball team finished the Midwest Invitational with a non-conference sweep of Alma College. The match was hosted by Calvin University.
The first set was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams holding four-point leads. The Thunder trailed 17-13 in the set, before eventually going on a 12-3 run to secure a 25-20 win. The Thunder followed up by building an early 5-1 lead in the second. Alma responded by tying the score at seven, before Trine dominated the rest of the set on their way to a 25-15 win.
The Scots had the early lead in the third, with 3-0 and then 5-2 scores, but the Thunder went on a 9-0 run with Addyson Kuzma at the service line. They then cruised to the 25-16 win and the sweep.
Kuzma's name was all over the stat sheet. She led the team with five blocks while finishing third with both six kills and two aces.
Elli Baker led the team with 11 kills, with Reese Steenwyk finishing second with eight. Baker also led the way with four aces while Julia Maggio finished with three. Cali Stevons had 21 assists and Jordan Budzinski finished with 15 digs.
Trine improves to 9-10 overall after the win. They will face a quick rematch with the Scots in their next contest, heading to Alma, Mich. on Tuesday, October 13. The match is set to start at 6:30 p.m. and will serve as the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) meeting between the two teams.
