Thunder Cruise Against Lawrence

APPLETON, Wis. – The Trine University men's hockey team scored four goals in the third period to secure a 5-1 victory over their hosts from Lawrence University. Five different members of the Thunder notched a goal.

The Vikings struck first in the contest, scoring in the 11th minute of play and holding onto  for just under nine minutes. In the waning seconds of the first, the Thunder responded. With possession of the puck in the offensive zone, Brendan Finn made a pass toward the net. Douglas Andersson tipped the puck to Josh Wright who fired a shot on goal that was turned aside. Michael DiPietra nabbed the rebound and sent it home.

The 1-1 score lasted until the last ten minutes of the contest when the Thunder started their run on goals. The first came on a three-on-two breakaway. DiPietra carried it over the blueline before passing it to Finn in the high slot. Another quick pass found Brendan Hill in the far faceoff circle where he fired his shot into the back of the net.

The team made it 3-1 two minutes later. This time with possession in the forward zone, Lem Vardy passed the puck to his defensive partner, Blake Tierney, who carried it down to the near faceoff circle. His shot was tipped into the net from just outside the crease by Drew Jeffers.

The fourth Trine goal came while shorthanded. The Vikings pulled their goalie with the power play opportunity, pulling out every stop for a goal. Sean Henry forced a turnover with Alexander Babich collecting the loose puck and passing it into the neutral zone. Nick White skated to the puck and chipped the puck home from the center faceoff circle.

The team added one more empty net tally in the final seconds of the game. This time Jeffers came up with the puck, digging it out of a scrum along the boards. He made a short pass to Max Marquette who moved toward the top of the faceoff circles before passing it back to the near boards where Brody Simko was waiting. The freshman fired the long distant shot into the net.

Kyle Kozma played the game in goal for the Thunder and finished with 27 saves, allowing just the one goal.
