FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Trine University men's tennis team swept a pair of matches hosted by Franklin College today, Saturday, September 6. They opened the morning against their hosts with a 6-1 victory before defeating Webster University 7-0.
The Thunder took all three doubles matches against the Grizzlies, to garner the first point of the day. Each of the three matches ended 6-2 in their favor. Andrew Spirrison and Sammy Yin competed at No. 1, Emmet Wirth and Drew Hackney competed at No. 2, and Landon Bassett and Asher Monson at No. 3.
Hackney had the most convincing of the singles wins for the team, taking the No. 1 match in straight games. Spirrison at No. 2 (6-0, 6-2) and Monson at No. 3 (6-2, 6-0) each needed just two more games to secure the victory for the team. Bassett finished the No. 6 match with a 6-3, 6-0 victory and Leyton Byler won in the No. 4 match 6-3, 6-1.
Trine won two of three doubles against the Gorloks, securing the doubles point. Hackney and Wirth in the No. 2 match 6-2, while Monson and Bassett swept their opponents in the third match.
Bassett was the only player to sweep his singles, taking the No. 6 match. Monson, needed just one more game for a 6-1, 6-0 victory in the No. 5 match while Spirrison finished next with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2. Both Hackney at No. 1 and Wirth at No. 3 won their matches 6-2, 6-2. Byler won the No. 4 match 6-4, 6-2 to finish the slate of matches.
The Thunder end the day 3-0 overall. They will host Indiana University East for their next contest. That dual is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, September 10.
