ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University men's tennis team opened the home portion of their schedule with a 5-2 victory over visiting Indiana University East.
The Thunder earned the first point of the day by taking two of the three doubles matches. Landon Bassett and Asher Monson had a resounding victory in the No. 3 match on the back of a 6-1 score. Drew Hackney and Emmett Wirth broke serve near the middle of the No. 2 match to pull away to a 6-3 victory.
Hackney garnered the first point of the singles matches with an easy 6-2, 6-2 victory in the top match. Spirrison secured the second in a battle of a No. 3 match. He lost the opening set in a tiebreaker before winning the second and a super with scores of 6-7(4-7), 6-2, 10-7.
The bottom of the lineup came up with two convincing wins for the Thunder. Leyton Byler won the No. 5 match 6-1, 6-2 while Monson came away with a 6-2, 6-1 victory in the final match.
Trine ends the day still undefeated with a 4-0 record. They will host a second straight match on Friday, September 12 when Taylor (Ind.) University comes to town. That dual is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
