GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The Trine University women's volleyball team fell in straight sets to the Greenville University Panthers this afternoon on the opening day of the DePauw Invitational.
Jordan Budzinski tallied 19 digs and
Elli Baker notched 6 kills.
Greenville took the match 28-26, 25-20, and 25-16. Trine led early in set one, aces from
Cali Stevons and
Julia Maggio paired with kills from
Reese Steenwyk and
Emmaline Leatherman gave the Thunder an 8-3 advantage. Greenville took the lead with two separate 5-0 runs. The Thunder trailed 24-21 but a 3-0 rally forced extra points. The Thunder survived two more set points with kills from Maggio and Baker before the Panthers took the set.
An early run in set two gave Trine a 7-4 lead, Maggio and Leatherman recorded kills and the defense forced two sideouts. Two runs of 5-0 would again provide the Panthers with the advantage. They were able to quiet the Thunder's rallies in set two and take the match in regular time. The third set was controlled by GU from the start. Trailing 20-9, Trine mounted a small rally to pull within 5 but the Panthers were too much and claimed the match.
Trine returns for day two of the DePauw Invitational tomorrow, first taking on the hosts at 11 a.m. and closing with a matchup against Dominican (Ill.) at 1 p.m.
