NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. – The Trine University men's tennis team finished off their match against Manchester University today, completing a commanding 7-0 sweep of their hosts. The dual was suspended Wednesday evening due to rain and resumed Thursday at 3 p.m.
Yesterday, the Thunder took all three doubles matches before the weather shifted. The No. 1 team of Andrew Spirrison and Sammy Yin along with the No. 2 pair of Drew Hackney and Emmett Wirth each won their doubles matches in straight points, 6-0. Landon Bassett and Asher Monson needed a few more points, winning the No. 3 match 6-2.
With leads in each of the six singles rolling over to today, the team swept through the match. Hackney had the most convincing of the wins in the No. 1 singles match, winning in straight points 6-0, 6-0. Just behind came his doubles partner Wirth who won 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 3 match. Spirrison took the No. 2 match 6-0, 6-2.
The team of Monson and Bassett also finished the day perfect. Monson won in the No. 5 match 6-0, 6-3 and Bassett took the No. 6 match 6-1, 6-3. Leyton Byler finished off the victory with a 6-2, 6-3 win in the No. 4 match.
The win is the first of the season, giving the team a 1-0 record. They will next take the courts with a pair of duals hosted by Franklin College on Saturday, Sept. 6. They start the day against their hosts at 10 a.m. before facing Webster University at 1:30 p.m.
