ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University women's volleyball team fell 3-1 to the Earlham College Quakers on Saturday afternoon inside Hershey Hall.
Emmaline Leatherman led the Thunder with nine kills and six blocks. Trine falls to 5-11 with the loss, Earlham now mirrors the Thunder's mark at 11-5.
Earlham took the match 25-13, 19-25, 25-23, and 25-22. The Thunder fell behind early in the first set and were not able to recover. Leatherman had five kills in seven attempts in the first set.
Trine erased a 6-5 deficit with a 13-4 run in set two.
Julia Maggio sparked the run with a kill before teaming up with Leatherman for a pair of blocks.
Elli Baker added a kill and
Jordan Budzinski notched an ace. Trine led 19-10 and cruised from there to take the set.
Trine took a quick 9-4 lead. Leatherman and Maggio held the lead for the Thunder, Maggio with a pair of kills and Leatherman blocked four Quaker attacks. Earlham rallied back to tie the set at 16, three consecutive aces would provide the Quakers with their first lead of the set. Maggio punched two kills and
Kylie Rowland added an ace to tie things at 22. Earlham scored three of the last four to take the set.
Trine again led early in set four, taking a 6-2 advantage. Earlham quickly regained control with a barrage of kills for a 14-11 lead. The Thunder battled, refusing to go down easy. They rallied to a 20-16 lead. Maggio had three kills and
Reese Steenwyk added a pair of her own. Earlham finished the game on an 8-1 run to take the match.
Trine opens MIAA play in their next match. The Thunder will head to Calvin on Friday, October 3
rd for a 6:30 p.m. match.
