Football Cruises Against Rose-Hulman

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University football team bucked the series trends by defeating the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology by the score of 27-10. The victory marks the first time that the battle of engineers went to the home team and the first time that the margin of victory was more than one score.

Both teams started with a short drive in the game, with the Thunder defense giving the team a spark in their second attempt of the game. Freshman Jeshua Miller came up with an interception on an underthrown ball by Rose-Hulman's Adam Yue. Miller turned on the jets, running 77 yards to the endzone for the pick-six and the 7-0 lead.

Kanaan Jewett ended the next Fightin' Engineer drive with another interception, returning it to near midfield with a 22 yard attempt. Ivyn Collins led the ensuing drive for the Thunder mostly with short passes and runs, but one of two fake punts on the evening extended the drive in its first set of downs. Cam McCarver ran 27 yards on a fourth-and-nine play in punt formation.

The next longest play of the drive cam on a pass to Jermaine Williams, who finished the game third on the team with 42 yards receiving. Collins finished the drive off with a pair of rushing plays that ended in the endzone, making the score 14-0.

The next few drives for both teams were unsuccessful, keeping the score the same well into the second quarter. Eventually Yue fumbled the snap for Rose-Hulman with Anthony Trudell able to recover the ball on the Trine 39 yard line. In a drive that was typical of the second half, the Thunder moved quickly on offense under the direction of RJ West II. The touchdown came after just five plays on a 29 yard completion in the back of the endzone to Williams.

The final drive of the half for Rose-Hulman ended in another interception, this time from Xavier Compton, with the visitors threatening to score. Trine ran out the clock to head to halftime up 21-0.

The Thunder added a field goal from Bryce Hufford to start the third quarter before forcing a three-and-out on the next Rose-Hulman drive. The Fightin' Engineers scored their first points of the season on defense, picking off West and going 60 yards to the house. After the extra point the score was 21-7.

After a long drive ended on a fourth down play for the Thunder, Rose-Hulman drove 70 yards, the longest drive of the day for the team, to add a field goal to their tally and make the score 24-10 as the game headed to the fourth quarter.

Hufford had the lone points of the fourth quarter with a 32 yard field goal with just under three minutes remaining in the game. Miller went on to seal the game late in the fourth with his second interception of the game.

West II led the offense with 140 yards passing on 18 completions and 25 attempts, he also added 17 yards on the ground. Cortaveon Barnett led the team with 116 yards on the ground with Saleem Felder finishing second with 63. In a quirk of the game McCarver, a defensive lineman, was third on the team with 52 yards on the ground. He had two rushes, both on fake punts.

Rashawn Street and Tristan Burrus tied atop the receiving corps each with 46 yards.

Defensively, Cole Basey led the team with 10 tackles. Jahari Branch and McCarver, playing his normal position, came in second with six tackles each. Colson Conrad, Ayden Billiard and Blake Lincoln all ended the game with a sack to lead the team.

Trine improves to 1-1 following the victory. They will remain on their home turf next Saturday, September 20, when they host Franklin College. That game is scheduled to kickoff at 1 p.m.
