ALBION, Mich. – The Trine University finishes as runners-up in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Men's Lacrosse Tournament after falling in the program's first championship game to Albion College by the score of 11-5.
The Thunder struck first in the contest, leading 1-0 with just under 13 minutes remaining in the first period. Landen Kruse scored the unassisted tally. The next four went to the Britons who built a 4-1 lead for the beginning of the second quarter.
Trine went back-to-back to respond out of the break. Kramer Zastrow bounced a ball over the opposition's goalie for the first goal. Then four minutes later, Riley Fischer with an assist from Noah Ericson took advantage of a man-up opportunity to cut the lead back to one at 4-3. Albion scored the final goal of the half to make the score 5-3.
Out of the half the defenses took center stage, but the Britons still found enough room to build on their lead. The home side scored the only two goals of the period to take a 7-3 lead into the final stanza.
JJ Boos looked ready to put the team on his back in the fourth, scoring two goals within 40 seconds of each other to cut the lead back to two at 7-5. Albion's experience took over after that, with the senior team milking the clock while adding back to their lead, eventually taking the contest with the 11-5 final.
Luke Arnold led the defensive effort for the team. He finished the game with 12 saves in his effort from net. Outside of the crease, Mason Levin led the way, finishing the game with three caused turnovers and five groundballs.
The Thunder finish the season 14-6, the winningest season in program history by four wins. The team's two wins in the tournament are the first postseason victories for the program.
