ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University softball team will compete in their fourth straight Super Regional after finishing a sweep of the 2025 NCAA Division III Softball Championship Angola, Ind. Regional with a lopsided victory against the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
The Thunder sent Alexis Michon too the circle for the decisive game and she delivered another strong starting effort. She opened the game with three straight outs, before allowing the only run and two hits by the Blugolds in the top of the second inning. She quickly settled back in for the final three squares of the game. She finished the contest allowing one run on two hits while striking out four.
Trine added run support of there own in the first inning. The first three Thunder batters reached, loading the bases for Debbie Hill who nearly beat out a play at first, but even her out scored the team's first of the day. Macy Rocha followed up with a single before Emma Beyer brought in a pair on a single to center field making the score 4-0.
The team found the wind and their power in the bottom of the third, blowing the game open with five more runs. Tyra Marcum led off the inning with a solo shot before the team worked a pair of runners onto the base for Kennedy Huckeby. The junior made the first homer of her career a spectacular one, plating three and giving the team an 8-1 lead. Keelin Wheaton followed right behind with her first long ball for Trine, putting the team up 9-1 and setting the stage for a run-rule victory.
Michon was up for that task, with just one more Blugold reaching base on an error by Beyer. The senior made up for her miscue with a diving catch in the middle of the infield that sealed the victory later in the top of the fifth inning.
Following the game, Michon was announced as the regional's Most Outstanding Player. Rocha, Hill, Huckeby and Whitney Duell were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Thunder improve to 39-5 following the victory that sends them to the program's eighth super regional. They will await their opponents for next week, with the first game of the super scheduled for Thursday, May 22.
