NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Trine University softball team picked up two more wins for the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) standings, sweeping their hosts from Saint Mary's College. They won the first game 13-3 in five innings before taking the second by the score of 10-6.
The Thunder opened the day with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning of play. Tyra Marcum and Macy Rocha each recorded RBIs on groundouts to give the team a 2-0 lead. The team built on their lead in the third inning, with Marcum recording another RBI, Whitney Duell scoring on a passed ball and Debbie Hill finishing up with a sacrifice fly.
Trine put the game out of reach in the fourth inning, plating seven runs for a 12-0 lead. Marcum added her third of the game with Rocha adding two on a triple. Emma Lee, Emma Beyer, Keelin Wheaton and Ainsley Phillips each brought in one to finish the scoring. Roach finished the scoring for the team in the fifth with a final RBI.
Alexis Michon made the start and earned the win in the circle. She finished her four innings of work allowing four hits while striking out six. Lauren Clausen made her return after battling an injury by finishing out the game.
The Thunder built another early lead in the second game of the day, hitting in the bottom half of the inning per MIAA rules. Hill brought in the first run during the first inning with double to left field and then scored later in the inning on a passed ball for the 2-0 lead. Duell added a run in the second inning with a single.
Beyer and Phillips built the lead to 5-0 with back-to-back home runs in the fourth inning.
Hill made the start for Trine in the game and took the shutout into the fifth inning. She ultimately finished her five innings with six strikeouts while allowing six runs. Those runs all came in the fifth inning when the Belles finally found a rhythm in the batter's box.
The Thunder responded in the bottom of the fifth with Phillips and Marcum tallying RBI singles, Karley Trine coming up with an RBI triple and Beyer scoring on a botched double steal play. Wheaton added a final run in the sixth to close out the game 10-6.
Michon entered the circle for the final two innings, earning her second save of the season. She pitched two innings while allowing just two hits and striking out four.
Trine improves to 24-4 overall and 8-0 in MIAA play after the pair of wins. They will travel to face Alma College for their next conference doubleheader. Those games are set to start at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 18.
