ORLANDO, Fla. – The Trine University women's tennis team dropped their first dual of the season to a tough squad from Allegheny College. The contest came down to a pair of matches that ended in super tiebreakers with razor thin margins.
The Thunder took the first point of the match after winning two of the doubles matches. Alexis Maloney and Emilee Bassett at No. 2 along with Emily Hatseras and Lizzie Welker at No. 3 both picked up 6-4 victories.
The match went on to a wild singles portion with five of the matches featuring a tiebreaker of some kind and with four ending in a super tiebreaker. Elina Locane bounced back from her doubles loss by taking the No. 1 singles match 7-6(7-5), 6-2. Emma Beehler did the same at No. 2, despite dropping her first set, with scores of 3-6, 6-1, 11-9. Â The pair of wins put the team one point from victory.
Addison Lockwood dropped a close match at No. 6, falling 6-3, 2-6, 4-10 and Welker ended her day with a 1-6, 3-6 loss at No. 5. After the pair losses the score went to 3-2 with just the No. 3 and No. 4 matches remaining. Bassett at No. 3 won her first set, before falling in both a tiebreaker second and the super tiebreaker with scores of 6-2, 6-7(4-7). It was a similar story for Hatseras who fell in the No. 4 match 6-0, 6-7(4-7), 8-10.
The Thunder fall to 7-1 following the loss which concludes their spring break trip to Florida. They will continue their season at home when they host Manchester University on Wednesday, March 12. That match is set to start at 4 p.m.
