ORLANDO, Fla. – The Trine University men's tennis team picked up another win in Florida by defeating Concordia University Wisconsin 7-0.
In a switch from the norm, the teams started the day with singles. Three of the six matches went to a super tiebreaker but the Thunder came out on top of all six to secure the victory. Drew Hackney won the No. 1 match with scores of 2-6, 6-3, 10-6 while Andrew Spirrison also needed a tiebreaker at No. 2 with scores of 6-1, 3-6, 10-7. The final tiebreaker came at No. 4 where Caleb Morris won 6-4, 2-6, 10-8.
Elijah Schilthuis had the most convincing win, taking the No. 3 match 6-1, 6-4. Nicholas Jen needed one more set for his win at No. 6 coming away with scores of 7-5, 6-0. Emmett Wirth rounded out the card, winning the first set of the No. 5 match 6-4 and going up in the second 4-1, before his opponent retired.
Trine also took the doubles point in the match to extend their lead to 7-0. Hackney and Spirrison won the No. 1 match 6-0 while Schilthuis and Wirth took the No. 2 match 6-4. Jen and Asher Monson played a tight match but fell in tiebreakers 6-7(3-7).
The Thunder improve to 5-3 overall following the win. They will face a pair of opponents tomorrow, Wednesday March 5. They start in the morning by facing Cedarville University at 8 a.m. before finishing up against Wartburg College at 5 p.m.
