ORLANDO, Fla. – It was a tough day in the Sunshine State for the Trine University men's tennis team. They fell in a pair of contests, first to Cedarville University by the score of 5-2 and then to Wartburg College 4-3.
This morning match saw Yellow Jackets take all but one of the doubles matches for the first point of the day. Drew Hackney and Andrew Spirrison won the No. 1 match 6-2. During singles Nicholas Jen earned one of the team points for the Thunder in a marathon #5 match. He won 7-6(7-5), 3-6, 10-3 in that contest. The other point came from Leyton Byler who won 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 6 match.
Against the Knights the dual came down to the final matches. The team won the doubles point for the match with wins in two matches. Hackney and Spirrison won again this time by the score of 7-5. Caleb Morris and Jen earned the other win with a 6-3 in the No. 3 match.
Hackney at No. 1 singles with a 6-0, 7-5 win and Byler at No. 6 with a 6-2, 6-3 win had the other two wins of the contest for the Thunder. Elijah Schilthuis and Morris both had heartbreaking losses where they won the first set before ultimately losing in the super tiebreaker.
The Thunder fall to 5-5 overall after the pair of losses. They will finish their time in Florida with a match against Allegheny College tomorrow, Thursday, March 6, at 11 a.m.
