ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University men's tennis team swept Albion College to start the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) portion of the season with a 7-0 victory.
The Thunder took all three of the doubles matches to secure the first team point of the game. All three doubles teams won 6-2 over their opponents. Drew Hackney and Andrew Spirrison competed at No. 1, Emmett Wirth and Elijah Schilthuis at No. 2 and Caleb Morris and Nicholas Jen at No. 3.
Jen posted the most impressive of the singles wins, sweeping the No. 6 match 6-0, 6-0. Hackney was just one point behind in the No. 1 match, winning with scores of 6-1, 6-0. Two more members of the team needed just three points above the minimum for their wins. Spirrison won at No. 2 with scores of 6-3, 6-0 and Schilthuis won the No. 3 match 6-2, 6-1. Morris took the No. 4 match 6-4, 6-2.
The closest match of the day was at No. 5 singles with the first set needing a tiebreaker before Wirth made quicker work of the second. He finished with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 victory.
The Thunder improve to 7-7 overall and 1-0 in MIAA play following the victory. They will next take to the courts when they host The University of Olivet on Tuesday, April 1. That match is set to start at 4 p.m.
