Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Sabres Extinct after Thunder Victory

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University men's hockey team will advance to their fourth-straight Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) Harris Cup Playoffs semifinal after finishing a sweep of visiting Marian (Wis.) University with a 4-1 victory. Logan Furstenau led the way for the Thunder in the contest, finishing the game with three points including two goals and an assist.

For the second night in a row, Trine struck first in the contest with an early goal. While taking a hit in the neutral zone, Kyle Watson was able to make a pass toward center ice connecting with Drew Jeffers. The freshman defender worked his way into the offensive zone, before threading a fantastic pass by a Sabres defender. The pass put Furstenau alone in front of the net for the easy goal.

It took until the third minute of the second period, but the Thunder added to their lead. With a man advantage after a Marian penalty, Trine ran their offensive in the forward zone. Tim Organ sat at the point, passing back and forth between Josh Wright to his left and Furstenau to his left. After a few passes, Organ decided to fire his shot from long range, finding the back of the net for the 2-0 lead.

The Sabres scored their first goal of the weekend in the sixth minute, when they received a power play of their own.

Another power play brought the Thunder lead back to two in the tenth minute. Jack Cooper carried the puck into the offensive zone, before going around the back of the net and passing it to Alexander Babich in the near faceoff circle. Babich went back to Cooper who fired a shot across the face of the net, giving Furstenau another easy look for a goal.
In the waning seconds of the game, Sean Henry iced the game banking a shot from his own end off the boards and into the net. The empty netter gave the team their final lead of 4-1.

Ronnie Petrucci led the defensive effort from the net, picking up another win. He recorded 20 saves in the contest. Lem Vardy did his part in front of the net, accounting for four of the team's 14 blocks.

The Thunder improve to 20-5-2 overall, matching the single-season program record set last season. They will continue their season in the semifinal round of the NCHA playoffs, but their opponent is yet to be determined. If St. Norbert College advances, they need one victory today after winning their first game last night, then Trine would head to Wisconsin next weekend. If the Green Knights fall, then the Thunder would host Adrian College instead.
