GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The #9 Trine University Men's Basketball team fell 70-53 this afternoon to #20 Calvin.
Aidan Smylie led the Thunder with an 11-point 10-rebound double-double. Trine drops to 21-4 (11-3 MIAA) and Calvin is now 19-6 (14-0 MIAA). The Knights wrapped up the regular season MIAA Championship, Trine holds the #2 seed in next week's MIAA tournament.
Trine struggled early on, the Knights held the Thunder without a field goal for the first 8 minutes of game time. Trine shot just 24% from the floor in the first half. Facing an early 20-2 deficit, Trine used a 9-1 run to stay in the game.
Emmanuel Megnanglo scored twice and Smylie connected on a triple. Calvin had all the answers, responding with a 17-6 run to close the half.
The Thunder outscored Calvin 36-32 in the second half as shots started to fall. Trine shot 50% from the floor in half two. Trine cut it to 38-26 early on but the Knights again would counter Trine, four points in the paint and two threes gave Calvin a 50-32 lead with 12 minutes to play. The Thunder were unable to muster a run the rest of the way and ultimately fell 70-53.
Trine will travel back to Grand Rapids on Friday for the semifinals of the MIAA Tournament. The Knights will host both the semifinals and finals.
