DAYTONA BEACH –
Danny Flood and
Jayden Bradshaw combined for 42 points and 10 made three pointers as the duo helped the Trine University men's basketball team snap a two-game slide with a 79-61 win over Washington and Lee on Monday afternoon. The Thunder (5-3) took down the previously unbeaten Generals (6-1, 1-0 ODAC) on day one of the Mauro Panaggio Tournament, hosted by DME Academy.
Flood poured in seven triples as part of his 25-point performance. Bradshaw added 17 with three long balls of his own. Trine owned a 41-33 advantage on the glass in what was a balanced effort.
Drew Panning led with eight boards and 13 Thunder grabbed at least one rebound. Both teams committed nine turnovers, but it was Trine that was able to cash in, holding a 12-2 advantage in points off turnovers.
Flood scored Trine's first eight with a pair of triples.
Cade Brenner and
Trevon Rochester-Thomas each hit a three pointer to push the Thunder lead to 14-9 just ahead of the halfway mark of the first half. Flood found Bradshaw for a layup and then tingled the twine on a trio of triples on consecutive possessions to give Trine an 11 point lead with 12 minutes gone in the game. The teams traded baskets toward halftime with the Thunder doing nearly all of their damage from the paint to take a 36-27 lead to the locker room.
The nine point lead grew to 14 early in the second half as
Nate Tucker netted a pair of shots and Flood buried a sixth shot from downtown. Washington and Lee battled back to trim the advantage to eight, fighting to preserve their unbeaten record. The Thunder had the answer in the form of
Jayden Bradshaw. He knocked in three pointers on consecutive possessions and split a pair of free throws to kickstart a 26-8 run that put the game in hand for the Thunder.
Eddie Millington had a bucket,
Elisha Jones added a triple, and
Cade Brenner took a steal from sea to shining sea for a layup. Bradshaw continued the run with a third triple and a lay-in. Flood finished it off with his seventh long ball and a pair of free throws to lead 77-51 with three minutes left.
Trine will take on Piedmont University (Ga.) tomorrow in the championship game of the four-team event. Piedmont defeated SUNY Brockport 91-82 in the second game of the afternoon.
