HOLLAND, Mich. – The Trine University women's volleyball team used a dozen aces and 14 kills from
Reese Steenwyk to take #7 Hope College to a decisive fifth set before ultimately falling in their regular season finale. Trine (10-14, 5-3 MIAA) claimed the third and fourth sets inside DeVos Fieldhouse but the Dutch (21-5, 8-0 MIAA) took the fifth and the win.
Trine started fast, taking a 6-1 lead in set one. Hope scored 10 of their next 13 by kill and took a 14-11 advantage. Trine had the answer with kills from
Emmaline Leatherman and
Julia Maggio paired with two Dutch errors, Trine led 15-14. Hope pulled away to take the set 25-18 from there.
Trine again led early in set two, leading 7-4, 10-7, and 12-9. Trine scored five of the twelve by ace, once by
Jordan Budzinski,
Anna Zellers, and
Kylie Rowland while
Cali Stevons had two. Hope again showed their offensive prowess to erase the lead and take a 23-16 advantage and win the set by an identical 25-18 score.
Trine trailed 8-6 in set three, the Thunder forced a flurry of errors to regain the lead 14-11. The lead sparked the offense as Trine took a 7-3 run backed by kills from four different players and another ace from Budzinski, to push the Dutch to the brink. Hope mounted a rally and forced three set points before Trine took the set on a service error.
Set four was even at 11 with Budzinski adding another ace and
Elli Baker notching two kills. Steenwyk added three kills and Zellers aced the Dutch defense to help Trine open a 20-13 lead with a 9-2 run. The Thunder claimed the set 25-18 to force the deciding fifth set.
The Thunder were bested by the nationally-ranked Dutch in set five. After holding strong early on, Hope ended the set on a 10-2 run to claim the set 15-6 and the match 3-2.
Trine will host the winner of tomorrow's match between The University of Olivet and Saint Mary's College on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the first round of the MIAA Tournament.
