Thunder Shutout Spartans for Sweep

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University men's hockey team finished the sweep of the visiting University of Dubuque with a 4-0 shutout.

The Thunder scored the first goal of the contest in just the second minute of play.  Luke deVries passed the puck out of the defensive zone to start the play, despite suffering a strong check during the effort. Alexander Babich raced the puck forward into the offensive end into the far faceoff circle before passing it straight to his right where Logan Furstenau was waiting to fire the shot into the goal.

It ended up being the lone goal of the period. The Spartans eventually outshot the home team in the stanza 12-5, helped by power play chances in the later minutes. Kyle Kozma was up for the challenge in net making all 12 saves and send the game to intermission 1-0.

The Thunder scored twice in the second period. The first came after a turnover in the neutral zone. Sean Henry passed the puck to the blueline where  Max Marquette was waiting to carry it over the line. Marquette made is way down to the far faceoff circle before passing it back to the slot where Rylan Brady was waiting to score on the stick side of the net.

90 seconds later, the team scored again. This time Brody Simko caused a turnover in the offensive zone before skating toward the back of the net. From behind the redline he fired a shot that bounced off the back of the goalie's blocker and into the net, making the score 3-0.

The final goal of the game came in the 11th minute of the third period. The Spartans tried to clear their zone but the puck ended up with Josh Wright in the neutral zone. He was able to offload it before taking a hit and Keiton Klein did the rest, firing his shot from the near faceoff circle.

Trine was outshot in the contest 25-22, but Kozma played a perfect game in net. He made all 25 saves to earn the team's first shutout of the season.

The Thunder improve to 5-1-0 overall and 4-0-0 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) play. They will travel to face the Milwaukee School of Engineering for a pair of games next weekend. The first is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. CT on Friday, November 21.
