HOLLAND, Mich. – The Trine University women's volleyball team concluded their season on Friday night with a 3-0 loss to the #7 Hope College Flying Dutch. Second team All-MIAA selection
Emmaline Leatherman led Trine with nine kills and fellow second teamer
Anna Zellers had 14 assists.
Hope (22-5, 8-0 MIAA) took down Trine (11-15, 5-3 MIAA) in straight sets 25-19, 25-18, 25-21.
Elli Baker led the way for Trine in set one with four kills and a pair of aces. Just one week ago, the Thunder aced Hope a dozen times but the Dutch had the answers this evening as Trine managed just three. Trine overcame an early deficit to tie the match at 8 and take a 10-9 lead on back to back kills from
Julia Maggio. The Thunder pulled within one to trail 15-14 before Hope pulled away and claimed the set.
Trine again kept set two close early on as Leatherman led with three kills. Hope broke a back and forth trend while leading 12-11 with a 5-0 run and never let the Thunder rally and claimed set two.
Unwilling to allow their season to end, Trine came out hot in set three, they used a 5-0 run to take a 5-2 lead. Leatherman scored three of Trine's first six via swing and
Reese Steenwyk added three more to help Trine to a 14-12 lead. Hope flexed their muscle and scored seven of the next nine, with Trine only scoring on service errors. Leatherman forced three match points with a pair of kills to cut the lead to 24-21 before Hope claimed the match.
Trine concludes their season with the loss and finishes 11-15 on the year with a 5-3 mark in conference play.
