Men's Hockey Falls to Roos in Season Opener

CANTON, N.Y. – The Trine University men's hockey team scored first but dropped the opening game of the 2025-26 season. The State University of New York in Canton won the game 2-1.

The Thunder built a comfortable lead in shots during the first period, eventually finishing with a 16-6 advantage overall and 9-4 on goal.

It paid off in ninth minute of the contest. Trine regained control of the puck in the offensive zone to start the sequence with Kyle DeMarco firing a shot on goal from near the blue line. The rebound ended up on the stick of Brody Simko who had a shot from the top of the near circle blocked and cleared to the far boards. Simko chased it down in the far circle and sent a pass behind the net. It bounced off the boards to the near side of the net where Logan Furstenau was waiting to throw the puck top shelf for the goal.

The 1-0 lead lasted into the first intermission and then again to the second. In the second period the Thunder again had a lead in shots, this time 10-5 overall and 8-3 on goal.

That advantage shifted in the third with the Roos winning the shots battle 11-4 overall and 10-3 on goal. They quickly took advantage of that shift, scoring in the first minute of the period. They then took the lead in the 12th minute with a power play goal.

Kyle Kozma, who made the start in net and ended the game with 15 saves, went to the bench with 1:03 left on the clock. Even with the extra skater the Thunder were unable to find the back of the net and the score went final in favor of SUNY Canton.

Trine will again look to record their first win of the season tomorrow, Saturday, November 1 at 4 p.m. They will face Misericordia University in the game, which will be hosted by SUNY Canton.
