Men's Soccer Hangs Close with Nationally Recognized Calvin

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Trine University men's soccer team held close with Calvin University, who are receiving votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches national poll, but ultimately fell by the score of 2-0.

It looked like it might be a long night for the Thunder, with the Knights scoring in the 19th minute of the contest to take a 1-0 lead. But the Trine defense buckled down following the tally and held their hosts scoreless for the rest of the half and then again for the first 40 minutes of the second period.

Brandon Walker led part of that effort, finishing the game with a pair of saves, despite adding a loss to his record. All told Calvin had 12 shots in the contest, with the defense holding all but two out of the back of the net.

The Thunder offense was much less successful. The first shot of the contest came in the 51st minute when Mohamed Aljably fired the ball over the top right side of the net. The other came in the 77th minute when a foul gave Trine a free kick in the offensive side of the field. Nikola Bastaic took the attempt.

Trine falls to 1-10-1 overall and 0-2-0 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play. They are set to host their next match on Wednesday, October 15. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Shive Field.
