Men's Volleyball Closes Trip to Wisconsin with Five Set Thriller over Wisconsin Lutheran

WAUWATOSA, Wisc. – The Trine University Men's Volleyball team closed out a three game trip to Wisconsin with a five set reverse sweep of the Wisconsin Lutheran Warriors this morning. Kevin Boncaro and Ryan McDonald each established new program top ten marks in the match. Trine is now on a three game win streak and are 3-4. WLU falls to 1-4.
 
The Warriors took sets one and two 25-22 and 27-25. Trine responded with the reverse sweep 25-13, 25-27, 15-12. Kevin Boncaro tied his #3 all-time mark for kills in a math with 25 and McDonald established a new #2 mark for assists with 56. As a team the Thunder set a new #4 mark for assists in a five set match with 60 their 61 kills are good for sixth-best all-time. Trine hit .264 for the match, including .462 in set four.
 
Set one featured five ties and two lead changes, unfortunately the Thunder were on the wrong end of the second one. The Warriors broke a 12-12 tie and would not trail the rest of the set. Trine would lead for much of set two before a late rally by the Warriors would force a 24-23 set point in favor of the hosts. Trine would take the next two points and force their own set point. WLU scored the final three and took a two set advantage.
 
Set three was tight early on, Trine began pulling away behind a kill and two aces from Karl Both, two errors and kills from Boncaro and Carter Steffgen blew the set open at 19-12, Trine would cruise to a 25-13 win. The Thunder rolled out to a 12-4 lead in set four, the Warriors rallied to 17-12 but Trine used a 7-1 run to take a 24-13 lead, Boncaro added five more kills, all from McDonald and Johnson-Kuhao Ho'okano-Pelekai added two more kills. Carter Steffgen added four of his ten kills in set five, Steffgen hit .474 for the match on 19 total attempts. Trine held an 8-5 lead as the teams switched sides in set five. Boncaro and Steffgen earned kills before the Thunder defense forced three Warrior attack errors to close out the set.
 
Trine hits the road again next week, heading to Bloomington, Illinois for two matches at Illinois Wesleyan. First against Illinois Tech on Saturday at 2:30, then against the Titans at 5:00 p.m.
