Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

#7 Thunder Sweep Lawrence with 4-1 Victory

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University men's hockey team finished the weekend sweep with a 4-1 victory against Lawrence University, pulling away after surrendering the first goal.

The Vikings scored their lone goal in the 12th minute of the contest and then held the 1-0 lead into the fifth minute of the second period.

The Thunder scored their first of the day unconventionally. The play started normally enough with Aleksa Babic forcing settling the puck in the defensive zone before handing it off the Brendan Finn who skated it through the neutral zone. His pass went behind the net to Tyler Blanchard who threw the puck toward the slot. It didn't make it through, instead bouncing off the back of the goalie and into the net for the goal.

Trine took the lead 12 minutes later. Max Marquette kept the puck in the forward zone skating to the point before passing it to Alexander Babich in the far circle. The freshman fired a shot that went across the face of the net, ending up along the near boards on the stick of Tim Organ. Organ skated around the back of the net before banking the puck home from the bottom of the far circle.

The Thunder added another goal in the 12th minute of the final stanza. Working the offense, Drew Welsch skated behind the net before getting tied up by some Viking defenders. The puck ended up on the stick of Michael DiPietra who skated back to the top of the near circle before passing along the blueline to Noah Marino. The defender fired a long range shot that weaved through the defense and into the back of the net.

Desperate for some offense, Lawrence pulled their goalie for the final two minutes of the game. With just 16 seconds left, Finn intercepted a pass and was able to just poke forward and away from a Viking skater. Marino popped the puck over the defense, looking to clear the zone, but it ended up being a shot on goal that found the back of the empty net.

After a shaky first period, Kyle Kozma settled into the net to secure the victory. He made some great saves in the beginning of the second period to preserve the one goal deficit. He ended the game with 20 saves.

The Thunder improve to 14-2-1 overall and 8-1-1 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) play. They will host Lake Forest College for their next competition. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, January 24.
