APPLETON, Wis. – The Trine University women's hockey team came up short in their comeback attempt, falling to their hosts from Lawrence University by the score of 3-2.
It took nearly 15 minutes of game, but the Vikings scored the first goal of the contest on what would be their lone power play opportunity of the contest. They added a second goal two minutes later to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
The lone goal of the second period, went to the Thunder. Payton Hans scored the unassisted tally to cut the deficit to one with just over seven minutes remaining in the stanza.
Hans scored again seven minutes into the final period, taking advantage of the team's lone power play of the game. Kailey Mleko and Olivia Porthan added assists.
Lawrence scored the final goal with three minutes remaining to retake a 3-2 lead. Even with an extra forward for the final minute and a half, Trine was unable to respond, and the score went final.
The Thunder fall to 5-9-2 overall and 2-5-2 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) play. They will finish the weekend tomorrow, Saturday, January 18. They faceoff with Lawrence again at 2 p.m. CT / 3 p.m. ET.
