FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Trine University men's tennis team picked up a pair of wins to remain perfect. They defeated their hosts from Franklin College 6-1 this morning and then took down Webster University 7-0 in a neutral site match.
The Thunder opened the day by taking the doubles point against the Grizzlies, 2-1.
Sammy Yin and
Andrew Spirrison won the No. 1 doubles match 6-1 while
Nicholas Jen and
Caleb Morris took the No. 3 match with the same score.
Yin and Morris shared the honor of most convincing singles win in the contest. Yin finished the No. 1 match with a 6-2, 6-1 victory while Morris took the No. 5 match 6-3, 6-0.
Drew Hackney won his first match of the day at No. 2 with scores of 6-1, 6-3. Spirrison remained unbeaten with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 3 and Jen finished off the match with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 6.
The team won all nine matches against the Gorloks. Jen and Morris won the most convincing of the doubles matches, taking the No. 3 match 6-1. Yin and Spirrison took the No. 1 match 6-3 while Hackney and
Emmett Wirth came away with a 6-4 win in the No. 2 match.
Hackney had the most convincing of wins during the singles portion of the match, winning 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2.
Elijah Schilthuis won his first match of the day in the No. 4 singles with scores of 6-1, 6-1 while Jen won his fourth of the day in the No. 6 match, 6-2, 6-0. Yin remained undefeated with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 1 and Morris won the No. 5 match 6-2, 6-2. Spirrison had the closest match of the contest, winning 7-6 (7-3), 6-0 in the No. 3 match.
After the day of competition the Thunder are 3-0 for the season. They are set to take the courts again on Tuesday, September 10 for another pair of dual matches in Sturgis, Mich. They open the day against Spring Arbor University at 9:30 a.m. before taking on Bethel (Ind.) University at 1:30 p.m.
