STURGIS, Mich. – The Trine University men's tennis team dropped a pair of matches against NAIA opponents, their first two losses of the season.
The Thunder opened the day against Spring Arbor University falling 5-2 in the contest. The doubles team of
Sammy Yin and
Andrew Spirrison took the No. 1 match 6-4 for the lone win in that portion of the day.
Yin went on to earn the team a point toward the team score with a 6-3, 7-5 win in the No. 1 singles match. The other point came from
Drew Hackney in the No. 2 match where he won 6-1, 6-2.
The No. 1 doubles team picked up another win against Bethel (Ind.) University in the second dual of the day. They won that match 7-5, but the other two doubles matches ended in favor of the Pilots.
Unfortunately, the singles matches all went to Bethel, giving them the final lead of 7-0. Hackney supplied the closest of the matches, taking the opening set of the No. 2 match by the score of 6-3. He went on to lose the second set 6-2 before retiring during the tiebreaker.
The Thunder fall to 3-2 following the day. Members of the team will next take the courts when they travel to the Hope College Tournament this upcoming weekend. That event is set to start on Friday, September 13 and will finish on Saturday, September 14.
