ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University men's tennis team dropped their first home match of the season, falling to Anderson (Ind.) University by the score of 4-3.
The Thunder opened the match with a pair of wins in the doubles portion of the contest, taking the first point of the day.
Sammy Yin and
Andrew Spirrison won the No. 1 match and
Drew Hackney and
Emmett Wirth won the No. 2 match, both with scores of 6-3.
Yin completed an undefeated day by taking the No. 1 singles match with scores of 7-5, 6-1. Hackney dropped the first set of the No. 2 match, before coming back to win the point for the Thunder with scores of 5-7, 7-5, 10-7.
The bottom three singles players for Trine all went to a tiebreaker set, but none could get the win and a final match point.
Elijah Schilthuis dropped the No. 4 match 2-6, 6-3, 4-10 in the first of the tiebreakers.
Caleb Morris won his first set before falling 6-4, 3-6, 3-10. In the closest of the matches,
Nicholas Jen fell in the No. 6 match 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 7-10.
The Thunder fall to 3-3 following the tight loss. Members of the team will represent Trine by traveling to the ITA Regional Championships in St. Louis, Mo. for the next competition. That event is set to start on Friday, September 20.
