Kouyate's Pair Lead Thunder to Comeback Win

ANGOLA, Ind. – Djimo Kouyate scored two goals in the final 15 minutes to complete the come from behind victory for the Trine University men's soccer team, as they defeated visiting Otterbein University by the score of 2-1.

A mostly quiet first half was interrupted in the 28th minute when the Cardinals finally put a shot on goal. Aidan McGonagle was up to the challenge and made the save to keep the game scoreless.

Kouyate supplied pressure for Trine a few minutes later. After receiving a pass inside the penalty area, he fired a shot from in close that forced a diving save. The rebound ended up back at Kouyate's feet and looked destined for the back of the net with the keeper well out of position. A diving effort by an Otterbein defender kept the game scoreless.

Freshman Will Offutt forced one more save late in the first half and Kouyate missed just high as the game remained scoreless at halftime.

The Cardinals broke the tie in the 60th minute of the contest. After a corner kick seemed to be knocked out of the penalty area by the Trine defense, an Otterbein player was able to settle the ball. He then found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

With time running out for the Thunder, Evan Komrska drove toward the net from the side and drew a foul in the penalty area. Kouyate took the penalty kick and buried it in the right side of the net to tie the game with less than 12 minutes left.

Not content with the tie, the Cardinals went back on the attack looking to retake the lead. The aggression backfired when the Thunder came up with a midfield turnover and Mohamed Aljably ended up with the ball. He moved forward to just outside the penalty area and fired a beauty of a pass to Kouyate who came up with his second goal of the game. The game winner made the score 2-1 with just 17 seconds remaining.

The Thunder improve to 1-1 following the comeback win. They will continue their season when they host North Central College on Friday, September 6. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
