#18 Women's Basketball Rolls Past Big Blue

ANGOLA, Ind. – Sidney Wagner stuffed the stat sheet and Hailey Cole did damage on the offensive glass to lead the Trine University Women's Basketball team to a 71-41 victory over Millikin on Friday afternoon. Trine is now 8-1 (2-0 MIAA) while Millikin drops to 2-8 (1-1 CCIW). Wagner finished with 13 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds, and 4 steals. Cole added 10 points and 7 rebounds, with 5 coming on offense.
 
A high scoring first quarter got started when Wagner found Sierra Hinds in the corner for a triple. From there, Erin Sherwood made a basket of her own a had a pair of dimes to Katie Tate and Jada Rhonehouse. Sherwood added a layup off an assist from Wagner, who then made one of her own. The Thunder kept the momentum rolling after a line change. Cole made a basket, on the ensuing possession she grabbed two offensive boards and split a pair of free throws. The next two possessions, Cole would again grab an offensive board and make the put back. Trine led 21-11, by the end of the quarter the Big Blue would cut the lead to 24-18.
 
It then took Millikin 25 minutes to match their point total from the first frame. A suffocating defensive performance was highlighted by a 38-30 rebounding advantage and 13 steals. Trine allowed just 5 Millikin offensive rebounds on the afternoon. The Thunder scored the first 12 points of the second quarter. Hinds found Wagner for a triple, then Wagner returned the favor as Hinds buried her second of three triples. Trine held a comfortable 40-23 lead at the intermission.
 
Another fast start helped the Thunder stretch the lead to 33 midway through the third quarter when Zoe Willems converted an and-one attempt to give Trine a 59-26 lead. Tate added two of her five assists in the frame, Wagner added another and Trine assisted on 18 of 27 made field goals for the day.
 
Coach Rang went deep into the bench in the fourth quarter with 17 players seeing action. 11 players scored and recorded a rebound while seven had at least one assist. Trine dominated in the paint, outscoring the Big Blue 34-8.
 
The Thunder head to Oshkosh, Wisconsin next weekend for two games. First, they will get a rematch of last years' NCAA Tournament game against #6/9 Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Sunday, December 29th. The Thunder then take on Ripon on Monday the 30th. The Red Hawks are receiving votes in the WBCA and D3hoops.com national polls. Both the Titans and Red Hawks made appearances in last season's NCAA Tournament.
