Women's Basketball Opens Season with a Win in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE – Sidney Wagner poured in 20 points while Katie Tate added 12 more and the #23 Trine University Women's Basketball team took down Wisconsin Lutheran 60-49 and opened the season with a road victory. Wisconsin Lutheran received votes in the D3hoops.com preseason poll. Trine is now 1-0 while the Warriors fall to 0-1.

In the first ever meeting between the programs, Trine started fast taking a 7-0 lead and then stretching it to 17-5 by the end of the first quarter. The Thunder maintained their strong lead in the second quarter thanks to some impressive free throw shooting, making 8-10 from the stripe. Wagner and Tate along with Allison Capouch and Allie Walther made shots from the line as the Thunder held a 29-23 lead at the break.

The Thunder looked poised to pull away in the third quarter with another fast start thanks to buckets from Wagner and five rebounds from Erin Sherwood, who had nine on the night. The Warriors opened the fourth quarter by erasing an eight point Thunder advantage over the first six minutes to cut the score to 48-45. Again it would be the free throw shooting that allowed the Thunder to pull away and claim the win. Tate made two with three minutes to go before hitting a triple with 1:15 remaining to make it a 10 point Thunder advantage. Jada Rhonehouse made another, and Wagner closed out the game with two more makes in the final minute.

Trine will open the home slate at the Cameron Hospital Classic on Friday, November 15th against Lake Forest and Saturday the 16th against Allegheny.
