DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Trine University men's hockey team secured a series win with a 3-1 victory over their hosts from the University of Dubuque. Special teams were crucial for the team with all three of their goals coming with a man advantage.
It took more nearly half the game before the zeros came off the scoreboard. The Thunder struck in the ninth minute of the second period, during just their second powerplay opportunity of the day.
Josh Wright fired a shot wide of the net to start the sequence.
Michael DiPietra touches it up the boards with Wright forwarding it further along and holding off a defender.
Aleksa Babic finally had clear ice to fire a shot from the blueline that struck true.
The team added to their lead six minutes later. Once again up a man,
Tim Organ set up the offense at the point, eventually skating toward the far boards and switching off with another Thunder skater. Organ then passed the puck down to the redline where
Jack Cooper wasted no time firing his own pass across the face of the net. The puck movement left
Logan Furstenau with an easy look for the goal.
Trine scored one more, just seconds into the third period. DiPietra and Babic passed the puck back and forth between the point and the high slot. Babic eventually changed pace with a pass toward the near boards giving Wright a shooting lane that led to the goal.
Kyle Kozma played the game in net for the team. He finished with 22 saves, despite allowing a single goal in the third.
The Thunder improve to 5-0-1 overall and 3-0-1 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) play. They will return home to host the Milwaukee School of Engineering next weekend. Game one of the series is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, November 22.
