Box Score MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Trine University men's hockey needed three minutes of extra time but secured the win and weekend sweep with a 4-3 overtime result against the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE).
Once again, the Thunder offense outshot the opposition in the opening stanza and it led to the same result as last night, nothing on the scoreboard. Trine posted 13 shots to MSOE's four, but neither team found the back of the net and the game went to the second period scoreless.
The Raiders came out on fire in the second period, they would eventually outshoot the Thunder for the first time of the weekend, 14-6. More importantly they scored in the fourth minute of the period to take a 1-0 lead.
Trine responded three minutes later with a goal of their own. Logan Furstenau scored the response, his second goal of the season. Chace McCardle and Sam Antenucci added assists on the tally.
The Thunder took their first lead in the opening minutes of the second period. Bobby Price scored the goal with Furstenau adding an assist.
Both teams followed up by trading power play goals to put the Thunder up again at 3-2 with ten minutes remaining in regulation. Price scored his second goal of the game on that man-up opportunity with McCardle and Matteo Ybarra adding assists.
MSOE scored the answer in the 17th minute of the final period, tying the game at three and eventually forcing overtime.
The Thunder pressed an advantage in the extra time, putting three shots on goal, including the game winning goal. Antenucci scored the final goal with Furstenau and Sean Henry adding assists.
Trine improves to 14-3-0 overall and 7-1-0 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) play. They take five points from the weekend, dropping one for the overtime result today. The team will return home for their next weekend of competition. They are set to take on Aurora University on Friday, January 19 at 7 p.m.
