Box Score

BEREA, OHIO  --  The Trine University women's basketball team was defeated by No. 14 nationally-ranked Baldwin Wallace University, 58-46, in a non-conference game at Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea, Ohio.

Baldwin Wallace (8-0) scored the first eight points of the opening quarter until a three-pointer by sophomore Tara Bieniewicz (Chesterfield, Mich./Dakota) put Trine (5-3) on the board and was followed by a layup by junior Shay Herbert (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney) to cut the deficit to three points, 8-5, with 6:23 remaining in the period.  The Thunder later cut the deficit to a point on two occasions with the last one coming with 40 seconds left following a layup by junior Jaycee Parrett (Wabash, Ind./Wabash).  The Yellow Jackets tacked on a layup of their own before time expired to extend the margin to three points, 16-13, heading into the second quarter.

A three-pointer by BW marked the first points of the second frame and pushed the difference to six points before a pair of free-throws by Trine's Katy Steers (Portage, Ind./Portage) started a 7-0 scoring run and gave the Thunder their first lead of the game by a 20-19 score with a little under eight minutes to go in the first half.  Trine's lead later grew to four points following a jumper by freshman Sam Underhill (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview) at the 5:41 mark, 25-21, but the Yellow Jackets ended the half by outscoring the Thunder, 13-2, to regain control heading into the break by a score of 34-27.

Trine stayed within striking distance as BW led by only as many as six points that included a 41-35 score with 5:25 to go in the third quarter.  The Thunder then gained some momentum by outscoring the hosts, 6-2, in the final 5:25 to narrow the gap to just two points, 43-41, after 30 minutes.

BW got the breathing room it needed in the fourth quarter as the Yellow Jackets held Trine to just five points in the final quarter.  BW started the frame with a 13-0 run to record its first double-digit lead of the game en route to posting its largest margin of the contest of 15 points, 56-41, with five minutes to go.  Herbert scored what turned out to be the only points for Trine with a layup and then a three-pointer late in the quarter, but it was the Yellow Jackets who came away with the 58-46 victory.

Herbert was the team's leading scorer with 13 points on five-of-six shooting (83.3 percent).  She was also tied for the team lead in rebounding with six boards.  Bieniewicz was second in scoring with 11 points that included three made shots from behind the arc.  Steers completed the list of double-figure scorers with 10 points and tied Herbert in rebounds with six.

Trine is scheduled to host Ohio Northern University on Saturday, Dec. 21 at the MTI Center.  Tip-off between the two teams is set for 3 p.m.
