Box Score OLIVET, Mich. - The Trine
University volleyball team took care of business quickly on the
road as they defeated Olivet College 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-17). The
Thunder are now 9-8 on the season and stay in fourth in the MIAA
with a record of 4-3.
The Thunder led early in each of the three sets,
but the Comets refused to give in. Trine was able to hold off
Olivet in part because of their tremendous night at the serving
line where they had 12 aces and tied a season-low with just four
serving errors. Sophomore Darcy Crabtree (Gaston, Ind./Wes-Del) had
a season-high six aces including three straight late in third set
to send the Thunder on to the victory.
Leading the way offensively for Trine was junior
Betsy Irwin (Athens, Ohio/Alexander) with a game-high 10 kills and
three blocks. Freshman Melanie Troyer (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart
Memorial) had a solid game with six kills, seven digs and four
aces. Senior Julie Kooienga (Hamilton, Mich./Hamilton) and freshman
Carly Searles (Levering, Mich./Petoskey) each tallied four kills.
Searles also had three blocks to go along with a team-high eight
digs.
Junior setter Sarah Radekin (Athens,
Ohio/Alexander) led the Thunder offense with a game-high 23
assists.
With the win, Trine has now won five straight
games at Olivet and 13 of the last 15 matches against the
Comets.
Trine will next travel to Alma on September 30
for a 6:30 p.m. match.
