THUNDER MAKE QUICK WORK OF HORNETS

ANGOLA, Ind. - It was an all-around solid game for the Trine University volleyball team as they swept conference opponent Kalamazoo College 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-12). The Thunder are now 8-7 on the season and 3-2 in the MIAA.

The opening set started out as a back-and-forth match as Kalamazoo took the early lead, however the Thunder battled back scoring consecutive points taking the lead at 9-7. The Hornets pulled within one, but Trine tallied four straight points to pull ahead for good. Trine added another six point rally to put the first set away.

Game two saw the Thunder take the lead and never look back. Kalamazoo was only able to tie the score at 3-3, before Trine quickly pull away. Trine scored seven straight points to take a commanding 13-4 lead. The Hornets would slowly chip away at the Thunder lead as they scored eight of the final 13 points, but by then it was too late.

The third and final set saw Trine down just one point early on. However, Trine quickly put together a run where they scored 10 of 13 points to go ahead for good. The Thunder finished off the Hornets by scoring eight of the final 10 points of the set.

The match was truly an entire team effort as Trine had six players scoring five or more kills on the night. Leading the way was junior Betsy Irwin (Athens, Ohio/Alexander) with a game-high nine. Senior Julie Kooienga (Hamilton, Mich./Hamilton) and junior Sarah Radekin (Athens, Ohio/Alexander) each tallied seven. Freshman Jordan Bell (Coldwater, Mich./Bronson) knocked down six while fellow freshmen Melanie Troyer (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) and Carly Searles (Levering, Mich./Petoskey) each tallied five.

Radekin led all players with 28 assists. Bell also led all players with three service aces.

Leading the defense for the Thunder was senior Andrea DiRuzza (Alexandria, Ind./Alexandria Monroe) with nine digs. Sophomore Darcy Crabtree (Gaston, Ind./Wes-Del) and Troyer each dug up eight.

Trine will go right back to work as they host defending national champion and top ranked Calvin College on September 24 for a 1:00 p.m. match.
