Box Score ANGOLA, Ind. - It was a
tough night for the Trine University volleyball team as their six
game winning streak was snapped in a 3-1 (24-26, 20-25, 25-13,
23-25) loss to St. Mary's College. The Thunder are 7-7 on the
season and 2-2 in the conference.
The opening set saw the Belles take an early
lead. The Thunder trailed most of the set until late when they
scored four straight points to tie the game. Trine then rallied off
consecutive points to take their only lead at 24-23. However, it
was St. Mary's who scored the final three points to take the
set.
Not wanting to fall behind early again Trine
quickly jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the second set. Yet St.
Mary's would be the team to battle back this time tying the
game at five. Both teams continued to battle back and forth in the
set. With the set tied at 16, the Belles would rally off five of
the next seven points to take the lead and the set.
In the third set, the Thunder once again jumped
out to an early 4-1 lead, but this time they refused to let up. The
Thunder tallied seven straight points to take a 14-6 lead and would
go on to dominate the set.
The fourth and final set proved to be a true
see-saw match. The final set saw 10 tie scores and eight lead
changes. After St. Mary's scored the first two points, Trine
rallied back to score four straight. Both sides would trade three
point rallies as Trine held an 8-6 lead. The Belles would use a six
point run to take the lead at 14-10, but Trine would slowly but
surely climbed back into the match tying the set at 17 all. Both
sides traded point over their next several possessions. With the
game tied at 22, St. Mary's scored consecutive points take
the lead and the set as Trine was unable to cap off another rally
to force a fifth set.
Betsy Irwin (Athens, Ohio/Alexander), a junior,
led Trine with a game-high 16 kills and two solo blocks. Freshman
Carly Searles (Levering, Mich./Petoskey) had a season-high 12 kills
while hitting a game-high .308 percent. Fellow freshman Melanie
Troyer (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) played solid with eight
kills and a game-high 20 digs.
Junior Sarah Radekin (Athens, Ohio/Alexander) led
the Trine offense trying with a game-high 35 assists.
Sophomore Darcy Crabtree (Lucerne, Ind./Pioneer)
helped out the defense with 10 digs.
The loss snaps Trine's six game winning
streak, which had tied a school record.
Trine will look to return to their winning ways
as they host conference opponent Kalamazoo College on September 23
at 7:00 p.m.
