THUNDER FALL TO TOP RANKED KNIGHTS

Box Score

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - It was a tough night for the Trine University volleyball team as they ran into the top ranked team in the country, Calvin College. The Thunder fell 3-0 to the Knights as they dropped to 14-12 on the season and 8-7 in the conference.

The Thunder opened the first set leading 3-1, but it was tough to keep the Calvin offense at bay as they would score five of the next seven points to lead 6-5. The Thunder kept within striking distance, but the Knights would go on a run where they scored seven straight points to lead 18-6 and would go on to take the set.

Set two mirrored the first set as Trine notched the first point of the set, but once again the Knights would rattle off several long rallies including scoring eight straight to lead 16-4. Trine struggled in the second set as they scored just four kills compared to 11 errors for a hitting percentage of -.206.

Trine hung closes in the third set as they battled back to pull within two at 14-12. From there, Calvin would again score eight straight points to take a 10 point lead and eventually the match.

Freshman Melanie Troyer (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) led the Thunder with four kills. Senior Betsy Irwin (Athens, Ohio/Alexander), and the freshman duo of Jordan Bell (Coldwater, Mich./Bronson) and Carly Searles (Levering, Mich./Petoskey) each added in three kills. Searles had a team-high seven digs, while Irwin knocked down two blocks (one solo). Bell added in a team-high two aces.

Junior Sarah Radekin (Athens, Ohio/Alexander) had 11 assists while contributing with two kills.

Trine struggled to get their offense going against the Knights as they tallied just 17 kills on the night. The Thunder did their best to keep Calvin's top hitters in check, as none of the Knights scored double-digit kills. Trine also held the Knights to single digit kills in two of three sets.

Trine will close out their regular season as they host Olivet College for Senior Night on October 28 at 6:30 p.m.
