THUNDER QUIET THE BRITONS

Box Score

ANGOLA, Ind. - It wasn't the prettiest win of the season for the Trine University volleyball team but it got the job done as they swept Albion College 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-12). The Thunder improve to 13-10 on the season and 7-5 in the conference.

The Thunder took the early lead in set number one and refused to let the Britons back into the game. Albion pulled within one at 6-5, but Trine rallied off four straight points to extend their lead to 11-6. Albion made a run in the set as they scored four straight of their own, but the Thunder lead was too much to overcome.

Set number two was a different story for the Thunder as they had to claw their way back from an early hole. Trailing by as much as four points, Trine fought back with five straight points to pull within one. The Thunder took their first lead of the set at 14-13 on a service ace by sophomore Darcy Crabtree (Gaston, Ind./Wes-Del). The Britons would tie the game right back up but three straight points by the Thunder gave them the lead for good.

Trine took the early lead in set three, but the Britons tallied six straight points to take a 7-2 lead. The Thunder rallied with three straight kills to pull within a point. Following a service error, Trine again rallied big, this time with six straight points to take a 12-8 lead. From there it was all Thunder as they scored 13 of the final 17 points of the match.

Junior Betsy Irwin (Athens, Ohio/Alexander) led the Thunder with 14 kills. Freshman Melanie Troyer (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) was a dig shy of a double-double as she finished her night with 10 kills and nine digs. Senior Julie Kooienga (Hamilton, Mich./Hamilton) added in eight kills to go along with a game-high four blocks (one solo). Freshman Carly Searles (Levering, Mich./Petoskey) had a solid all-around game as she finished the night with nine digs, six kills and three blocks.

Junior Sarah Radekin (Athens, Ohio/Alexander) setup the offense all night with a game-high 38 assists. Radekin also helped out on defense with a game-high 13 digs.

Trine will head out on the road on October 21 as they travel to in-state rival St. Mary's College for a 7:00 p.m. match.
